This session&#8217;s leaders, Dr. David Allison of University of Alabama at Birmingham and Dr. Kantha Shelke of Corvus Blue LLC, will explore how behavior change science can be applied to food product development to create an environment that is conducive for healthful behaviors and to encourage the purchase of wellness products.<br/><br/></p>
<p><strong>Functional Foods in a New Era of FDA Enforcement</strong><br />
Functional foods continue to be a rapidly growing segment of the consumer food market. However, the sale of these products must be approached with increased caution because the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has sharply increased its enforcement activities. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>President Obama held his Healthcare summit last week in which he invited the Republicans in order to hear their ideas on healthcare reform.  The 6 hour summit was intended to bring together both sides and gather ideas in order to form a compromise bill that would pass both chambers of Congress. <br/><br/></p>
<p>Democratic leaders stated the purpose of the summit was ‘to put a face on gridlock”, namely that the Republicans would be shown as obstructing the passage of the Healthcare reform bill.  For weeks the Democrats and the press have been describing the republicans as the party of ‘NO’.  The Republicans at the summit gave their ideas on healthcare reform that were less sweeping and more piecemeal than those in the Democrat bills. Though the over all inclination of the republicans has been to scrap the current bills and start the whole process over.<br/><br/></p>
<p>President Obama’s spokespersons indicated that Obama had avoided a trap that the Republicans were setting for him.  (Though it’s hard to fathom why he should fear a trap as Obama was the one who called for the summit.)  To any objective observer the whole summit idea was to try to place the Republicans in a defensive position, and to blame them for not passing any Healthcare reform bill.<br/><br/></p>
<p>On Wednesday, President Obama Called for final, ‘last ditch effort’ to pass a healthcare reform bill. In his latest proposal Obama has included some republican ideas:<br/><br/></p>
<p>Eliminating fraud, waste, and inefficiencies from the healthcare system<br/><br/></p>
<p>Reduce medical malpractice lawsuits<br/><br/></p>
<p>Encourage individual Health Savings Accounts (HSA)  <br/><br/></p>
<p>Obama also indicated that he would support the reconciliation process in order to prevent a Republican filibuster of any bill that comes out of the compromise committee sessions.  The reconciliation process has only been used in the past to pass bills to reduce the Federal spending. The reconciliation process has never been used to pass a major social policy bill, or a bill that is overwhelmingly opposed by the American public.  Trying to use the reconciliation process to pass a major social issues bill is a risky political maneuver.<br/><br/></p>
<p>The passage of the bill is far from certain.  The Democrats in the Senate do not have the 60 votes they need to pass legislation, which is why the reconciliation process is being utilized.  In the House, passage may be even harder.  Many Democrats have seen the political winds in America shifting, and fearing for their jobs, some are rethinking their position on healthcare.<br/><br/></p>
<p>The Republicans have vowed to use every procedural process they can to delay or stall the healthcare reform bill.  There is also disagreement between the House and Senate Democrats on the language in the final bill.<br/><br/></p>
<p>The importance of this bill passing or not passing cannot be overstated.  Politicians on both sides of the aisle realize the importance of this bill as indicated by the following statements:<br/><br/></p>
<p>“Whatever it takes to get health care done,” White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said of the president’s schedule.<br/><br/></p>
<p>Senator Harry Reid (D-Nev.) pledged to use “every option available.”<br/><br/></p>
<p>“We’re going to scrub the bill thoroughly,” said Mitch McConnell (R-Ky)<br/><br/></p>
<p>John A, Boehner(R-Ohio) said Obama “voiced support for a partisan scheme to jam the bill through Congress.”<br/><br/></p>
<p>Political analysis:<br/><br/></p>
<p>The whole Healthcare reform issue has become purely a political issue.  Political analysts from all perspectives see the Democrats committing political suicide in order to pass a healthcare reform bill this session.  The political climate in America is shifting more toward the conservatives, and it appears that many current Democrat representatives will not be re-elected this November in any case.  The Democratic leadership is asking members to vote for the Healthcare reform bill as a lasting legacy for the Democrat party.  The leaders know that once this bill is passed, even though the republicans may regain control of the House and Senate in November, the die will be cast and it will be almost impossible to roll-back the reforms.  The Democrats will have ensured the changes in American society that they have been working toward for over 70 years.  Once the government has control of healthcare in the country, then they can control almost all aspects of American life.  When the government is paying for healthcare then the government can tell you what to eat, how much to exercise, and make decisions on whom receives healthcare or not based on political ideology. The passage of this bill will change life in America as we know it.  That is why it appears that Democrats are willing to committee political suicide for the passage of the bill.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Dozens of National Jewish Health faculty presented their latest research findings at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Allergy Asthma &#038; Immunology in New Orleans Feb 27-March 2, 2010. Below are several noteworthy presentations.<br/><br/><br />
<strong><br />
Vitamin D May Boost Effectiveness of Corticosteroids in Asthma</strong><br/><br/></p>
<p>Vitamin D enhances the activity of the corticosteroid dexamethasone more than ten-fold in cells taken from asthma patients.<br/><br/></p>
<p>National Jewish Health pediatrician Dan Searing, MD, and his colleagues measured levels of MKP-1, a protein essential for the anti-inflammatory effects of corticosteroids, in cells that had been cultured with dexamethasone alone or with vitamin D and dexamethasone. MKP-1 levels were significantly higher in cells cultured in vitamin D and 10nm concentrations of dexamethasone, than in cells cultured in 100nm concentrations of dexamethasone alone.<br/><br/></p>
<p>The findings suggest that vitamin D supplementation in asthma patients could improve control and/or allow for lower medication doses. The researchers are developing a clinical research protocol to evaluate vitamin D supplementation in asthma patients.<br/><br/></p>
<p><strong>Oral Immunotherapy Shows Promise for Egg Allergy</strong><br/><br/></p>
<p>Early results from the Consortium of Food Allergy Research (National Jewish Health, Duke, Johns Hopkins, Mount Sinai and the University of Arkansas) suggest that children with egg allergy can be desensitized by giving them oral immunotherapy with egg-white solid. Fifty-five children received daily oral immunotherapy for 44 weeks followed by an oral food challenge with egg. Fifty-one percent of children receiving immunotherapy safely consumed 5 grams of egg white, while none of the 15 patients receiving placebo treatments did. Researchers will continue to follow the children to see if they remain egg-tolerate long-term.<br/><br/><br />
<strong><br />
What is the Best Step-Up Asthma Therapy for Children?</strong><br/><br/></p>
<p>For children whose asthma is not well controlled and on low doses of inhaled corticosteroids, a long-acting beta-agonist may be the most effective of three possible add-on therapies, according to research by National Jewish clinician-scientists and their colleagues in the Childhood Asthma Research and Education Network.<br/><br/></p>
<p>Almost all the children responded positively to at least one of the three step-up therapies, but different medications worked better for different children. About 45 percent of the children responded best to the long-acting beta agonist salmeterol, 28 percent responded best to the leukotriene receptor antagonist montelukast, and 27 responded best to doubling the dose of the inhaled corticoteroid fluticasone. <p><strong>Marker for Steroid-Resistant Asthma Identified</strong><br/><br/></p>
<p>In a featured poster presentation, Elena Goleva, PhD, described how she and her colleagues found high levels of the protein uteroglobin in the airways of steroid-resistant asthmatics compared to the airways of steroid-sensitive asthmatics. The uteroglobin was secreted from clara cells, which are found in the small airways and help protect the airway epithelium by secreting a variety of products. Uteroglobin is known to inhibit the enzyme phospholipase 2.<br/><br/></p>
<p>The higher uteroglobin levels were also detected in plasma, which could make it a measurable marker of steroid resistance. Steroid resistance is a common problem in asthma, and an effective marker could help physicians settle on an effective treatment sooner.<br/><br/></p>
<p><strong>Exhaled Nitric Oxide for Asthma Diagnosis and Assessment in Children</strong><br/><br/></p>
<p>There has been ongoing controversy regarding use of nitric oxide as an effective tool for asthma diagnosis and assessment. Joseph Spahn, MD, and colleagues reported that exhaled nitric oxide is associated with physician diagnosis of asthma, days per week with daytime symptoms, asthma severity, and need for steroid bursts. They conclude the exhaled nitric oxide is a useful tool for diagnosis and assessment of pediatric asthma in an outpatient clinic.<br/><br/></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Department of Agriculture&#8217;s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) will host a joint public workshop on how best to measure progress in reducing foodborne illnesses on March 30, in Washington, D.C.<br/><br/></p>
<p>The President&#8217;s Food Safety Working Group has emphasized the need for improved metrics for evaluating the government&#8217;s efforts to prevent foodborne illness. The workshop will focus on current methods for evaluating food safety progress, the methodologic and data challenges involved, and the potential for improved metrics.<br/><br/></p>
<p>&#8220;Being able to draw links between what we&#8217;re doing to keep the food supply safe and the frequency of human illness is crucial for gauging the effectiveness of our programs &#8211; what changes are needed, and in what areas,&#8221; said FDA Deputy Commissioner for Foods Michael Taylor.<br/><br/></p>
<p>&#8220;To make our food safer, we must know as quickly as possible which foods are making people ill and why,&#8221; said USDA Deputy Under Secretary for Food Safety Jerold R. Mande. &#8220;This meeting will help us develop the specific measures we need to see which policies work best to improve food safety.&#8221;<br/><br/></p>
<p>The public workshop will include explanations, by CDC, of how rates of foodborne illness are estimated for various purposes; for example, to determine overall rates of foodborne illness and rates for specific pathogens. FDA, FSIS, and a state representative will describe other measurements they use to gauge the success of policies and other interventions for reducing foodborne illness.<br/><br/></p>
<p>&#8220;The data we collect and analyze can provide critical insights to guide our food safety programs; all stakeholders should understand how this information is best applied to advance food safety in the United States.&#8221; Dr. Rima Khabbaz, Deputy Director of Infectious Diseases, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.<br/><br/></p>
